As I worked on the chemistry chapters of this book, I was reminded of three good reasons why you should study chemistry in high school.

First, learning chemistry will increase your overall understanding of science. You'll find out how scientists use scientific methods to expand the frontiers of knowledge. In the lab, you will have an opportunity to experience these same methods for yourself.

Second, in today's world, it's useful to know chemistry. In fact, you certainly know some chemistry already. You have heard of the substances water, oxygen, and sugar. These are all chemicals. You may know a little bit about atoms and molecules. You'll learn much more about all of these topics when you study chemistry.

Third, chemistry will help you appreciate important issues in the world around you. You'll learn about such issues as water pollution, the use of fossil fuels, and the impact of forest fires. As you take the time to appreciate chemistry and its applications, I hope you'll enjoy the subject as much as I do.
