  Adding Decimals WARM UP
LEARN
  How can you add decimals?
TEST TALK Mrs. Piper combined two packages of ground beef to make hamburgers. One package had 0.25 pound of beef. The other had 0.37 pound. How much ground beef did she have in all?
Example A
STEP 1 Add 0.25 + 0.37.Estimate: 0.3 + 0.4 = 0.7

Add the hundredths. Regroup.

Add the tenths. Write the decimal point in the answer.
Mrs. Piper had 0.62 pound of ground beef in all.
Example B
Add 2.8 + 1.765. Estimate: 3 + 2 = 5

Write the numbers. Line up the decimal points. Write zeros to show place value.
Add as you would whole numbers. Bring the decimal point straight down in the answer.
