LEARN
How can you compare and order
fractions?
How can you compare 2 sixths and 2 thirds
Here’s what Lynda and Jason thought.
The numerators are the same. Each sixth is smaller than each third, so 2 sixths less than 2 thirds
I know 2 sixths is less than 1 half and 2 thirds is greater than 1 half. So 2 sixths less than 2 thirds
Fractions have a common denominator
when their denominators are the same.
Example A
Compare 5 eighths and 4 sixths Find a common denominator to compare.
     One Way     Another Way
Find a common denominator.     Multiply the denominators.
  8 x 6 = 48
  Use 48 as the common
denominator.
  Use 24 as the common
denominator.
