organisms are not the only things that are classified according to their characteristics. In math, you have learned about classifying geometric figures as plane figures or solid figures. |
|
| Plane
figures can be classified as closed or not closed. Closed plane figures can be classified as symmetric or non-symmetric, polygons or not polygons. When polygons are classified by number of sides, the four-sided polygons are called quadrilaterals. The chart shows how quadrilaterals can be classified. |
|
| Only one pair of parallel sides |
| Two pairs of opposite sides parallel and congruent |
| No parallel sides Two pairs of congruent sides |
| Parallelogram
with all sides congruent |
| Parallelogram
with four right angles |
| Rectangle with all sides congruent |
| 1. Trace each picture
and classify it as a symmetric or non-symmetric figure. |

| 2. Look
at your tracings for Question 1. For each, connect the outer points with straight lines to form a quadrilateral. Classify each quadrilateral, if possible. |
|
| 3. The list below describes characteristics
of one kind of polygon. What is the common name of this polygon? Be as specific as possible. |
|
| the
figure has 4 sides opposite sides are parallel not all sides are congruent opposite sides are congruent the figure has perpendicular sides |

| Find
5 examples of polygons in your home. In your science journal, describe what each is, and then name it as specifically as you can. |
