What do people with backaches, a person
recovering from surgery, and a sports star
have in common? They all could use the
help of a physical therapist.
Physical therapists help people who have
problems with their muscle, bone, and nerve
systems. When members of a sports team want
to prevent injuries, physical therapists can guide
them to safely play their sport.
Physical therapists carefully determine the needs
of a patient. Then, the therapist makes a list of
exercises that will best help the person. Many types
of scientific work involve the same steps: first find
evidence to form a conclusion of what a problem
is and then make a plan to solve the problem.
A person who wants to become a physical
therapist will need to attend four years of college.
States may require therapists to pass certain
tests before they are licensed to work. Physical
therapists need more than just medical
knowledge. They need to be friendly and
able to work with people.
Research ways that people can prevent
injuries while they play sports or do heavy
work. Make a safety poster to show what
you learn.
