Technology and Our Jobs |
|
| |
Technology often changes the way jobs are done. When this
occurs, an entire society can be changed in a big way! |
|
| |
One example of the way technology changed the way people live has to do with manufacturing. Manufacturing is the production of goods on a large scale. In the early 1900s, cars were built one at a time by one group of workers until the car was finished. Because this process was slow and expensive, most people could not afford to buy a car. |
|
| |
A man named Henry Ford solved this problem by using an
assembly line. In an assembly line, a product, such as a car,
moves through the factory while workers add parts to it. This
new process was quicker and less expensive than the old way
of building cars. It also allowed more people to buy cars. This revolutionized society and the standard of living in the United
States. The assembly line is used today to manufacture many
products in less time. |

In today's assembly lines, robots and other
machines are often
used to build and add parts.
This kind of assembly line is cheaper
and is often
more mistake-proof than using
people. The negative
effect is
that many people lose their jobs
to machines. |

car produced on an assembly
line developed by Henry Ford. |
