TEACH
Vowels usually have the short
sound when they are followed by
two consonants. Write sudden
on the board. Underline
consonants dd, and circle the
vowel u. Say sudden and identify
u as a short vowel. Guide
students in finding the VCCV
pattern in finger, intend, and
happen.

FIND THE PATTERN Ask students to identify the VCCV pattern in each of the spelling words. For each word, have them tell whether the two consonants that follow the vowel are the same, as in sudden, or different, as in finger. Have students name the vowel and say the vowel sound in the first syllable of each word.
