Target Skill Sequence
Target Skill Identify sequence of events.
Target Skill Use a graphic organizer to show sequence.
INTRODUCE
Have students think about the sequence the class follows to get ready for lunch each day. Perhaps students get their lunches, line up at the door, and walk to the cafeteria. Ask why the order of these events is important. (Possible response: Students don't want to get to the cafeteria without their lunches.) Explain that the sequence in stories and articles can also be important.
Have students read the information on p. 66. Explain the following:
  • Sequence is the order in which events take place.
  • A graphic organizer can help you remember the sequence of events in a story or article.
Use Skill Transparency 3 to teach sequence and graphic organizers.
TEACH
1
STRATEGY Use paragraph 2 to model how to create a graphic organizer.
Think Aloud MODEL I see that in 1542, Juan Cabrillo came to California. That's what I'll put first. People from Spain moved to California after that. The clue words tell me that is what happened next. Then I see that in 1841, farmers started coming to California. That must be the third event on the chart.
2
SKILL Determine a sequence of events.
Think Aloud MODEL I can use dates and clue words to help me. The third paragraph says people started coming to California to get rich after 1848. Juan Cabrillo traveled to California in 1542. Farmers moved to California in 1841. The year 1542 comes first, so that is the event that happened first.
PRACTICE AND ASSESS
3
SKILL People from China were not allowed to move to the United States.
4
STRATEGY The word Today
brings us to the present time. The chart can't continue because we don't know what will happen in the future.
WRITE Have students complete
steps 1 and 2 of the Write activity. You might consider using this as a whole-class activity.

Sequence
Moving to CALIFORNIA
Sequence means the order in which
    things happen.
Dates, times, and clue words such as first,
    then, next,
and last can help you understand
    the order of events.
Sometimes two or more events happen at
the same time. Words such as meanwhile
    and during can show this.
In 1542, a man from Spain named Juan Cabrillo
entered California. Many people from Spain moved
to California after that. Then, starting in 1841, many
farmers from the United States moved to California.
Over time, many different groups of people have
moved to California and made it their home. Because
of this, California has a very diverse population today.
Strategy Dates
and clue words are
important guides to
sequence. Put three
events from this
paragraph on the
sequence chart.

same time, many people from Japan were
   moving to California.
By 1852, one out of every 10 people who lived
in California was from China. But a new law in 1882
said that, for ten years, no one from China was
allowed to move to the United States. During that
After gold was found in California in 1848,
thousands of people from Europe, Asia, and other
parts of the world moved there. They hoped to become rich. Many of these people came from China.
Strategy
Strategy: Graphic Organizers
Using a graphic organizer can help you understand
what you read. Some of these are webs, charts,
and diagrams. For example, making a sequence
chart like the one above can help you see the
sequence. With some articles, you can fill in the
organizer as you read. With others, you need to
read the entire article before making the organizer.
Skill Which of the
following events took
place first? How do
you know?

(a) People moved to
California to become
rich.

(b) Juan Cabrillo
traveled to California.

(c) Farmers from the
United States moved
to California.
Skill Sometimes two
events happen at the
same time. Which
event took place
while people from
Japan were moving
to California?
Write
Reread the article, creating a
web for “People Who Moved
to California.” Use your web
to write a journal entry that a
California resident might have
written about the immigrants.
2.
Read “Moving to California.”
Make a graphic organizer like
the one above to identify the
sequence of important events
in the article.
1.
   Today, more people live in
California than in any other state in
 the United States.
Strategy Why
can this information
bring an end to the
sequence chart?

Beginning/Intermediate For a Picture It! lesson on sequence, see the ELL Teaching Guide, pp. 15–16.
Advanced Before reading "Moving to California," have volunteers use a map or globe to identify your state in relationship to California.
Target Skill Sequence Talk about dates and clue words students can look for to help
them determine the sequence. Give examples, such as before, after, then,
next, while, during that time,
and later. Let students offer other examples and
use them in sentences. To help students develop the sequence chart on
p. 66, have them find examples of clue words in "Moving to California." Help them determine the sequence from these clues.
