Imagine a person from a different land is visiting your town. Write a scene about what your daily life is like.
  1. List cast, settings, props, and
    costumes needed for the scene.
  2. Write a short scene that shows a few things you do every day. Include dialogue and stage directions. Identify the speakers for the dialogue.
EARLY FINISHERS Draw pictures for your scene. Show what the set and costumes look like.
Create a Time Line

Make a time line of Grandfather's travels.
  1. Review the story and look for details about the places Grandfather visits and what he sees during his travels.
  2. Make a time line summarizing Grandfather's travels. Be sure to list information in the order that it happens.
  3. Look at the Words to Know on p. 68. Include some of these words in your time line.
EARLY FINISHERS Write a short postcard message from Grandfather to his family. Use your time line to tell about one of the places he visits.

world map.
  1. Review the story to find details about Grandfather's travels.
  2. In some cases, the author doesn't name specific places. Use a map and story clues to figure out likely places Grandfather might have visited. For example, which state(s) in the United States have "deserts with rocks"?
  3. Make a list of places you think Grandfather visited.
  4. Show Grandfather's travels on a world map and identify the places you think he visited.
EARLY FINISHERS Discuss with a partner the parts of Grandfather's travels you think were the hardest. Use your map and story clues to support your opinions.

Use the Internet to find a place you would like to visit.
  1. Think of a place in the United States or another country you might like to visit, such as a city or town.
  2. Using a student-friendly search engine, type in keywords for your search such as travel Japan.
  3. Read the descriptions for the Web sites and decide which will give helpful and accurate information.
  4. Make a list of reasons why this place is a good travel destination.
  5. Follow classroom rules for searching the Internet and printing.
EARLY FINISHERS Print a picture of the place you wish to visit. Display your picture with your list of reasons.
