TEACH
The long e and long o sounds
can be spelled in different ways.
Write seaweed on the board.
Underline the letters ea and ee.
Say seaweed and point out that
both ee and ea spell the long e
sound. Guide students in finding
the letters that stand for the long
o sound in float and rainbow.

MNEMONIC DEVICES Point out that since ee and ea sound the same and oa and ow sound the same, students must memorize the spellings. Challenge students to think of memory tricks that will help them remember the correct spellings of the list words.

WRITE A DESCRIPTION
Ask students to use at least five spelling words to write a description of an ocean, river, pond, or lake.

Have students write the spelling words and circle each ea. Have them continue by circling ee, oa, and ow. If possible, they might use a different color for each letter combination.
