Build Background
ACTIVATE PRIOR KNOWLEDGE
BEGIN A WEB about sailing ships.
  • Have students write what they know about the parts of a ship (deck, sails, lifeboats, and so on). Record what students know in a web. Add an idea of your own.
  • Have students write any ideas they have about how ships are sailed and what it would be like to live on a ship. Record their ideas in the web.
  • Tell students that, as they read, they should look for information about sailing ships and note any new information to add to the web.

BACKGROUND BUILDING AUDIO This week's audio explores life at sea and traveling
the world. After students listen, discuss what they found out and what surprised them most about sea travel.

Create three-column charts that students can use to classify their lesson vocabulary
words.

Display the lesson vocabulary words. Have students tell what they know about the
words. Ask them to think about word meaning, check their glossary if needed,
and write each word in one or more columns of the chart. Activate Prior
Knowledge
Ask students to name the word with the suffix -ion and its base word (navigation,
navigate)
. Then have them name the word made from the base word dignify
(dignified)
. Ask students to use each base word in a sentence.

By the end of the week, students should know the lesson vocabulary words.
Students can add other words from the story to the chart and add
additional categories.
