Encourage English language learners to keep a notebook of words. They can write down words they hear other students use, words that interest them, and words they often use. Have them write a sentence for each word.
Text written at a student's independent reading level is text in which no more than about 1 in 20 words is difficult for the student to read.
Be sure to schedule time for students to work on the unit inquiry project "Great Adventures in History." This week students analyze the information they have found from Web sites or print materials.
