LISTEN TO LITERATURE Listen to Amelia and Eleanor Go for a Ride and "Women Explorers" as you follow or read along in your book. Listen for the sequence of events in Amelia and Eleanor Go for a Ride.
If there is anything you don't understand, you can listen again to any section.

Select a book you have already read. Record the title of the book in your reading log. You may want to read with a partner.
Choose from the following:
- Leveled Readers
- ELL Readers
- Stories Written by Classmates
- Books from the Library
- Amelia and Eleanor Go for a Ride
TEN IMPORTANT SENTENCES Read the Ten Important Sentences for Amelia and Eleanor Go for a Ride. Then locate the sentences in the student book.
BOOK CLUB Read nonfiction books about Amelia Earhart and Eleanor Roosevelt. Discuss the books with a group. Tell whether you like historical fiction or nonfiction books better and why.

Make two angel food cakes with pink clouds.
- Look at Eleanor Roosevelt's Angel Food Cake recipe on
p. 575. Calculate the ingredients needed to make two cakes.
- You can use mental math or repeated addition to double fractions and mixed numbers. Show the sums in simplest form. For example,

- Write the doubled recipe on a note card.
Early Finishers Describe a cake you would make for a special occasion. List the ingredients needed.

on p. 562 in the student
book. Use the glossary to
look up any words you
don't know.
- Look back at the story to
recall details about

- Draw a picture of Amelia
Earhart flying a plane.
Write a caption for it
using as many of the
Words to Know as
you can.
- Exchange pictures with
a partner and check that
your partner has used
Words to Know correctly.
EARLY FINISHERS Rewrite your caption using synonyms for some of the Words to Know. Remember, a synonym has almost the same meaning as another word.

Make a book about famous American women.
- Choose an American woman to research.
- Using classroom resources, write facts about the woman. Tell how she made a difference in other people's lives. Print or draw a picture to go with your facts.
- Work with your classmates to create a class book of everyone's research.
EARLY FINISHERS Write and print a bibliography of sources used. For books, list the author, title, and publishing information. For online sources, list author of content, title of page, title or owner of Web site, and URL. Include a note under each source describing the information it has.

Write a newspaper article about Amelia and Eleanor's flight.
- Review the story to recall what happens on the trip.
- Open a new document in a word processing program.
- Write a short newspaper article about their flight summarizing the events. Add an interesting title.
- Follow classroom rules for saving and printing your article.
