ACTIVATE PRIOR KNOWLEDGE
BEGIN A KWL CHART about Antarctica.
  • Have students list what they know about Antarctica. Record what students know in the first column of a KWL chart.
  • Have students write three questions they would like to answer about Antarctica. Record questions in the second column of the KWL chart. Add a question of your own.
  • Tell students that, as they read, they should look for the answers to their questions and note any new information in the third column of the chart.

Introduce Vocabulary
WORD RATING CHART
Create word rating charts using the lesson vocabulary words and categories Know,
Have Seen,
and Don't Know.
Graphic Organizer 5
Read the lesson vocabulary words and ask students to place a checkmark for each
word in the appropriate column: Know (know and can use); Have Seen (have seen
or heard the word but don't know meaning); or Don't Know (don't know the word).
Encourage students to tell where they may have seen or heard the words and what
they know about the meaning of each one. Ask them to use the glossary if needed.
Activate Prior Knowledge
Have students tell in a phrase or two how each word might be related to an
experience in Antarctica. Content Area Vocabulary
By the end of the week, students should be able to revise their charts to indicate that
they know and can use all the lesson vocabulary words. Have them demonstrate
their knowledge by using these words in sentences.
