Related words often have parts
that are spelled the same but
pronounced differently. Write the
words breath and breathe on the
board. Point out that the extra e
on breathe gives it a different pronunciation. Guide students in
recognizing and pronouncing other
related words.

FIND THE BASE WORD Ask
students to identify the related
words in the list of spelling words.
Then have them work in pairs to
determine which word in each
word pair is the base word.

WRITE A LETTER
Ask students to write a letter
using at least four of the spelling
words. The letter can be to a
friend or a relative, or a letter
to a newspaper or magazine.
These words may seem
easy to spell, but they are
frequently misspelled by
fourth-graders. Alert students
to these frequently misspelled
words. Point out that the
sound /o/ (aw) is spelled
augh in caught and ough in
bought.

REVIEW RELATED WORDS
Have each student create a
hiddenword puzzle. They can
exchange puzzles with a partner
to review the spelling words.
Spelling Strategy
Problem Parts
Have students look at a word,
say it, and listen to the
sounds. Then have them spell
the word aloud while they think
about its spelling. Ask them to
picture the word with their eyes
shut, open their eyes, look at
the word, and write it. Then
have them cover the word,
picture it, and write it again.
