OBJECTIVES
CVC When there is only one vowel at the beginning or in the middle of a word or syllable, it usually stands for its short sound.
VC/CV If a word has two consonants together in the middle (other than digraphs and blends), divide between them.
ELL
Support Phonics Speakers of monosyllabic languages such as Cantonese, Hmong, Khmer, Korean, and Vietnamese may pronounce a two-syllable word as two separate words. Have children practice saying multisyllabic words such as pencil, window, summer, and spelling.

TEACH
Remind students that vowels can stand for long or short sounds. Write the words
dollar and sudden. Draw a line to divide dollar into syllables.
  • Which letters in the first syllable are consonants? (d, l) Which letter is a vowel? (o)
  • Is the vowel in the first syllable of dollar long or short? (short)
  • When there is only one vowel at the beginning or in the middle of a word or syllable, the vowel usually stands for its short sound.
  • Do you think the vowel in the first syllable of the second word is long or short? (short)
Think AloudMODEL When I come to a word I don't know, I divide it into syllables and
sound out each syllable. (Draw a line between the first and second d in
sudden to divide the word.) The first syllable of this word has a vowel between
two consonants, so the vowel probably stands for its short sound.
SUDDENModel blending sudden. Then have students blend
the word with you.
 
PRACTICE AND ASSESS
DECODE LONGER WORDS Write these words. Have students read them
and then underline the short vowel in the first syllable.

READ WORDS IN CONTEXT Write these sentences. Have individuals read
them, point out the two-syllable words, and tell whether the vowel in the first syllable
stands for a long or short sound. Two-syllable words are underlined.
I hope the puppies act better when they grow up.
Bees get pollen in the summer.
We have hidden the key near the window.
To assess, observe whether students pronounce the two-syllable words correctly.

For additional review, provide students with words that have a long vowel sound.
Have them add, delete, or change the vowel sound to create a new word.
