Internet Inquiry Activity
EXPLORE WAYS TO EARN MONEY
Use the following 5-day plan to help students conduct this week's Internet inquiry
activity on ways to earn money. Remind students to follow classroom rules when
using the Internet.
DAY 1
DAY 2
DAY 4
DAY 3
Identify Questions Discuss the topic: Explore Ways to Earn Money. Brainstorm ideas for specific inquiry questions about ways children can earn money. For example, students might want to find out how to begin a business that will allow them to earn some extra money. Businesses might include petsitting, helping parents, or doing yard work. Have students work individually, in pairs, or in small groups to write an inquiry question they want to answer.
Navigate/Search Explain how to begin a simple Internet search using a
student-friendly search engine. Tell students that a search engine is a tool
that simplifies subject searching on the Internet by using keywords and returning
a list of locations that contain those keywords. Students simply type in keywords or phrases about something they want to learn more about. The search engine locates and lists several Web sites that contain those keywords.
Analyze Have students explore the Web sites they identified on Day 2. Tell them to scan each site for information that helps answer their inquiry questions. Students may need to do additional searching if more information or different information is needed. Students can print out or take notes about relevant information.
Synthesize Have students organize the information from Day 3. Remind them that when they organize, they pull information together and arrange it in an orderly, functional way. Organizing information will help students develop an answer to their inquiry questions.
Communicate Have students share their inquiry results. They can use a word processing program to create a flyer for a business they would like to start.
DAY 5
RESEARCH/STUDY SKILLS
Advertisement/Poster
TEACH
Ask students to state the purpose of an advertisement. Show the class an advertisement,
and point out the parts defined below.
  • The headline is the main part of the advertisement that catches the reader's eye. The headline might be a photo or a catchy phrase.
  • Most advertisements include a product shot. It might be the product by itself or a shot of the product in use.
  • Advertisements almost always have body copy, or text. The copy emphasizes the value of the product or service. It tries to persuade the reader.
  • Advertisers often use a signature that the consumer will remember. It might be a brand name or a memorable phrase.
Advertisement/PosterGive pairs of students advertisements from a
newspaper or magazine. Ask them to look for the
parts of an advertisement that are defined above.
Then lead a discussion with the class about
advertisements.
  1. What are some words in the advertisements used to persuade people to buy the product or use the service? (Answers will vary.)
  2. What benefits would people get from the product or service? (Answers will vary.)

ASSESS
As students study their advertisement, check that they understand its purpose and
can identify the product and keywords.
For more practice or to assess students, use Practice Book 3.1, p. 10.
