OBJECTIVE
Connect to Phonics Add -s to most words: plants. Add -es to words that end in ch, sh, or ss: inches. Change y to i and add es to most words that end with y: pennies. Creating plurals sometimes causes the spelling of a word to change. A plural can end in either the /s/ or /z/ sound.
  • Spell plurals by adding
-s or -es to most words.

TEACH
To create plurals for most words,
only the letter s needs to be added. However, if a word ends in ch,
sh,
or ss, the letters es must be
added to create the plural. For
words that end in y, that final y
must be changed to i before
adding es. Write plant plants, inch inches, and penny pennies on
the board. Ask students to point
out the difference between the singular form and the plural form
in each pair.
FIND THE PATTERN Ask students
to identify the singular form of each
plural spelling word. Have them
group words with the s ending
together, the es ending together,
and the ies ending together.

REVIEW PLURALS -s, -es
Have each student create a matching game. Tell students to write the plural spelling words on the left side of the paper. Then tell students to write the singular form of each word in a different order on the right side of the paper. Then have students exchange lists with a partner to match up the singular and plural forms of the words.
Spelling Strategy
Problem Endings
The last letter of a singular word determines how the plural of the word is formed. Have students pay attention to the last letter of singular words to help spell plurals correctly.
