GLOSSARY OR DICTIONARY
You can use a glossary or a dictionary to find the meaning of a word you don’t know. A glossary appears at the back of a book and lists important words from that book and their meanings. A dictionary is a separate book that lists many words and their meanings. Both list words in alphabetical order.
LESSON VOCABULARY
college

Target Skill SKILL SEQUENCE Sequence is the order in which
things happen in a story—what happens first, next,
and last. Sometimes a writer uses clue words like
then, next, and finally. Sometimes a writer does not;
then you can tell the order by picturing in your mind
what is happening.
Target Skill STRATEGY VISUALIZE Active readers make pictures
in their minds as they read a story. As you read, picture
in your mind the characters and what is happening.
That will help you keep track of the sequence of events.
SKILL CHARACTERIZATION Expressing characterization means that you read the words as if you were the
character.
