Adding new endings to words
sometimes changes the spelling
of the base word. These changes
can include doubling the consonant
at the end of the word or changing
the letter y to an i before adding
the ending. Write the spelling
words on the board. Guide
students to name the base word
for each spelling word and explain
what change, if any occurs when
the ending is added.
FIND THE PATTERN Ask students to group spelling words into four columns according to how the base word changes when adding a new ending: no change, double the final consonant, drop the final e, and change y to i.

Spelling & Phonics   Adding -ed, -ing, -er, and -est
WRITE A LETTER
Ask students to write a letter to a friend, using at least three spelling words. For each spelling word, ask students to write the base word above the word in red pencil.
These words are often
misspelled because students
are not sure when to double the consonant at the end of the
base word. Alert students to these frequently misspelled words.

REVIEW ADDING -ed, -ing,
-er,
and -est
Have students work with a partner. They should take turns calling out the base form of a spelling word. Then have the other partner spell the related spelling word. For example, when one partner says "please," the students would reply by spelling "pleased."
Spelling Strategy
Doubling Up
The last letter of a base word determines how the word is spelled when -ed, -ing, -er, or
-est is added. Have students pay attention to the last letter of base words to spell new words correctly.
