STRATEGY
CONTEXT CLUES
Context clues are words and sentences around an unfamiliar word. As you read, you may come across a word that has more than one meaning. For example, band can mean "a musical group." But it can also mean "a strip of material." Use context clues to help you figure out which meaning of the word is correct.

SKILL REALISM/FANTASY A realistic story tells
about something
that could happen. A fantasy is a story about something that could
never happen. Some realistic stories may include events that are fantasy.
STRATEGY MONITOR AND FIX UP To monitor means
to stop
reading occasionally, and check to be sure you understand what you're
reading. Fix up means to do something if you don't understand or are
confused. For example, if you're not sure whether a story is fantasy or
realistic, reread parts. A fantasy will have parts that couldn't possibly
happen in real life.
SKILL EXPRESSION AND INTONATION Reading with expression and
intonation means that you use different tones of voice and pitch as you read.
