WORD STRUCTURE
A prefix is a group of letters added at the beginning of a word that changes the word's meaning. A suffix is a group of letters added at the end of a word that changes the word's meaning. When you come across a word you don't know, look closely to see if the word has a prefix or a suffix that can help you figure out the word's meaning.

Target Skill SKILL CHARACTER AND SETTING A character is a
person who takes part in the events of a story. The setting is when and where a story takes place.
Target Skill STRATEGY STORY STRUCTURE Good readers use a
story's structure, or arrangement, to learn about the characters and the setting. Every story's structure has a beginning, a middle, and an end. Events happen all along the way in certain places and at certain times. Characters take part in the story's events.
SKILL APPROPRIATE PHRASING Appropriate phrasing
means pausing at the right places when you read. Punctuation marks, such as commas and periods,
signal the right places to pause.
