BUILD CONCEPT VOCABULARY
Start a web to build concepts and vocabulary related to this week's lesson and the unit theme.
  • Draw a Selling Food Concept Web.
  • Read the sentence with the word wares again. Ask students to pronounce wares and discuss its meaning.
  • Place wares in an oval attached to What to Sell. Explain that wares is related to this concept. Read the lines in which fragrance and lures appear. Have students pronounce the words, place them on the web, and provide reasons.
  • Brainstorm additional words and categories for the web. Keep the web on display and add words throughout the week.
Concept Vocabulary Web
The village market
Is a feast
For the ears, eyes, and nose.
Women and children chatter and giggle.
Goats and sheep bleat and baa.
Chicken cackle.
Women dressed in bright clothes and headbands
Wrap their babies on backs,
Balance their wares on heads.
Dogs steal.
Tortoises tied to stakes tug to break away.
Frightened monkeys climb their owners' backs.
A colorful collection of mouthwatering fruits:
Pineapples, mangoes, oranges, and pawpaw
Invite a bite.
Flies feast on sun-dried fish,
Dried deer meat,
And smoked snake.
The fragrance of palm sap
Foaming and fizzling in gourds
Lures drinkers to sellers.
The smell of cooked and raw,
Of sweet and sour mixing in the air,
Makes your head wonder
What's going on in your nose.
