Fluency
If… students
have difficulty
reading fluently,
then… provide
additional
fluency practice
by pairing
nonfluent
readers with
fluent ones.

DAY 5
Retell Leveled Reader The California Gold Rush
The California Gold Rush: A Letter HomeModel how to skim the book, retelling as you skim. Then ask
students to retell the book, one page at a time. Prompt them as needed.
  • What is this page mostly about?
  • What did you learn from reading this page?
2
Reread for Fluency
MODEL Read aloud pp. 3–5 of the Leveled Reader The California Gold Rush
without omitting or substituting any words. Have students note that you read
each word as written. Then reread pp. 6–7, skipping and misreading several
of the words. Have students tell you which model sounded better. Discuss
why reading with accuracy is important.
PRACTICE Have students reread passages from The California Gold Rush
with a partner or individually. For optimal fluency, they should reread three
or four times. As students read, monitor fluency and provide corrective
feedback. Students in this group are assessed in Weeks 2 and 4.
