What About Me?
Group Time
Read Leveled Reader
Let’s Make a Trade!
Let's Make a Trade!BEFORE READING Have students
create a T-chart with the head
Goods and Services. In the first
column, they will list the kinds of
goods people can barter with. In
the second column, they will list
the services people can do to get
these goods.
This book tells about
how people trade goods for
services to get what they need. As
you read, record on your T-chart
the goods people can trade, and the services people can do to get these goods.
DURING READING Have students follow along as you
read pp. 3–7. Then let them complete the book
on their own. Remind students to add information
to their T-charts as they read.
AFTER READING Have students compare the goods and services on their T-charts. Point out that this information will help them when they read tomorrow’s story What About Me?

DAY 1
ROUTINE
On-Level
Read Leveled Reader
What’s Money All About?
What's Money All About?BEFORE READING Recall the
Read Aloud “The Story of
Money.”
Why was it important
to find something that was
precious to everyone?
(If the
item was too easy to find or in
abundant supply, it would not
be valuable.)
Today you will
read about how people trade
around the world.
CRITICAL THINKING
Have students read the
Leveled Reader independently. Encourage them to think critically. For example, ask:
  • Why is bartering not always easy?
  • Why does each country have its own form
    of money?
AFTER READING Have students review the
selection to find five or more unfamiliar words and
determine their meanings by using context clues
or by consulting a dictionary. Then ask them to
write statements or questions that both include
the words and convey their meanings. Have
students meet together or with you to discuss
the selection and the statements they wrote.
Independent Extension Activity
NOW TRY THIS Assign “Now Try This” on pp. 18–19
of What’s Money All About? for students to work on
throughout the week. Have students research one
coin and how it has changed over the years.
