Read Leveled Reader The California Gold Rush
The California Gold Rush: A Letter HomeREINFORCE CONCEPTS This week's concept is community development. How does money affect the growth of a community?
BEFORE READING Using the Picture Walk Routine on p. DI•1, guide students through the text focusing on key concepts and vocabulary. Ask questions such as:
p. 3 How do you think the boy in this picture feels? (happy, excited)
p. 7 This story is about the California Gold Rush. What do you think the men in this picture are doing? (panning for gold)
Read p. 3 aloud. Then do a choral reading of pp. 4–5. Have students read and discuss the remainder of the book with a partner. Ask: Why was San Francisco called a boom town? (because new houses and business were developing so quickly)

SHORT VOWELS VCCV Write nectar, bottom, and flutter. Model blending nectar. Draw a line to divide the word into syllables. I know that when there is only one vowel in the middle of a syllable, it usually stands for the short sound. Since the letter e in nectar is the only vowel in the syllable, I know it stands for /e/. Continue guiding students in finding the VCCV pattern in bottom and flutter. Explain that when a double consonant appears in the middle of a word, usually only one consonant is heard, with the exception of suggest.
