then… reteach them by modeling blending or reading multisyllabic words.
If… partners have difficulty reading the Leveled Reader on their own,
then… have them follow along as they listen to the Online Leveled Reader Audio.

REINFORCE CONCEPTSThis week's concept is budgeting. People can make a plan for spending and saving their money by budgeting. By making a plan, they know exactly where their money goes. Have you ever made a budget? How has budgeting helped you?
BEFORE READING Using the Picture Walk Routine on p. DI•1, guide students through the text focusing on key concepts and vocabulary. Ask questions such as:
p. 3 This selection is about understanding money. What is happening in the picture? (Children are looking at toys.) Right, they are shopping for toys. I wonder if they have enough money for these toys.
pp. 4–5 Here it looks like the children are figuring something out. What do you think they are working on? (adding something up) The children are adding up their money and figuring out their income.
Read pp. 3–4 aloud, while students track the print. Do a choral reading of pp. 5–6. Have students read and discuss the remainder of the book with a partner. Ask: What happens if your expenses are more than your income? Why is it a good idea to save money?

BASE WORDS AND ENDINGS Write cake, box, stop, sunny, and track. Write cakes, boxes, stopped, sunnier, and tracking. These are base words with endings. Some words, like cake, add -s to make it plural and some, like box, add -es. What happens to sunny when the ending -er or -est is added? (The y is changed to i before the ending is added.) Be on the lookout for base words and endings.
