Salt Lick Boom Town
Salt Lick Boom TownBEFORE READING Have students create a three-column chart with
the labels Beginning, Middle, and
End
.
This book tells us how a town developed around a popular salt lick. As you read, look for how the town changes and develops in the beginning, middle, and end of the story. Record important events in the appropriate column of your chart.
DURING READING Have students follow along as you read pp. 3–7. Then let them complete the book on their own. Remind students to add information to their three-column charts as they read.
AFTER READING Have students compare the information on their three-column charts. Point out that understanding how a town grows will help them as they read tomorrow’s selection Boom Town.

Mr. Post’s Class
Mr. Post's ClassBEFORE READING Recall the
Read Aloud “Prairie Town.”
We
read about how a prairie town
developed. Today you will
read about how third-grade
students work to help make
their community better.
CREATIVE THINKING
Have students read the
Leveled Reader independently.
Encourage them to think
creatively and critically.
For example, ask:
  • How do new businesses change a community?
  • Why is it important for community
members to think about how to improve
    their community?
AFTER READING Divide students into groups and
have each group choose several difficult or
unfamiliar words and determine their meanings
by using context clues or a dictionary. Have the
class play charades by acting out the words while
others try to guess. Encourage students to meet
with you to discuss the selection and the vocabulary
words with which they are struggling.
Independent Extension Activity
HELPING THE COMMUNITY Assign the article on
p. 20 of Mr. Post’s Class. Have students use online
or print resources to find other community service
organizations for youth. Have them make a list of
organizations, noting the activities in which students
can participate. Then have students choose the
organization in which they are most interested
and write a short paragraph explaining what
the group does.
