MODEL Read aloud p. 3 of the Leveled Reader Let’s Save Money!, emphasizing the use of punctuation and the grouping of certain words. Point out the way your voice becomes slightly louder and more animated when you read the sentence with an exclamation point. Discuss how reading in phrases with expression creates a more pleasing rhythm than word-by-word reading.
PRACTICE Have students reread passages from Let’s Save Money! with a partner or individually. For optimal fluency, they should reread three or four times. As students read, monitor fluency and provide corrective feedback. Assess the fluency of students in this group using p. 85a.
