Read Leveled Reader Davis Buys a Dog
Davis Buys a DogREINFORCE CONCEPTS This week's concept is saving. People
can save money to help their families or buy something they
need or want.
BEFORE READING Using the Picture Walk Routine on p. DI•1, guide students through the text, focusing on key concepts and vocabulary. Ask questions such as:
p. 3 This book is about a boy earning and saving money to get something special. What does the boy want? (a dog) How can you tell? (The bubbles show what he is thinking.)
pp. 7–9 These pages show that the boy is active. Does he want someone to give him money, or does he want to earn it? (earn it) What might a person who wants to save money do at a bank? (Save money; a person can open a savings account to keep money safe.)
Read pp. 3–4 aloud. Then do a choral reading of pp. 5–7. Have students read and discuss the rest of the story with a partner. Ask: Did Davis get what he wanted? How? (Yes, he worked, saved his money, and bought his dog Buddy when he had saved enough money.)
