Retell Leveled Reader Davis Buys a Dog
Davis Buys a DogModel how to use the illustrations on successive pages to retell
parts of the story of Davis. Then ask students to retell the story,
using the pictures to recall events. Prompt them as needed.
For example, ask:
  • Tell me what the story is about in a few sentences.
  • What is Davis like?
  • Why do you think the author wrote this story?

Reread for Fluency
MODEL Read aloud pp. 3–5 of the Leveled Reader Davis Buys a Dog,
demonstrating expressive reading and how intonation makes the story more
interesting and understandable. Help students recognize that each sentence and each
quotation of a character has an expressive quality, such as the tone of a question or
the stress on phrases such as “a dog of his own.” Then, in contrast, read two or
three sentences rapidly in a monotone, and discuss with students how the
meaning is less clear.
PRACTICE Have students reread passages from Davis Buys a Dog with a partner
or individually. For optimal fluency, they should reread three or four times. Monitor
fluency and provide corrective feedback. Assess the fluency of students in this
group using p. 115a.
