REVIEW STORY ELEMENTS Help students identify the main characters and the setting of My Rows and Piles of Coins. Then guide them in using the Retelling Cards to list story events in sequence. Prompt students to include important details.
Retelling CardsRETELL Using the Retelling Cards, have students work in pairs to retell My Rows and Piles of Coins. Monitor retelling and prompt students as needed. For example, ask:
  • Tell me what this story is about in a few sentences.
  • How does this story remind you of other stories?
Read “Learning About Money”
BEFORE READING Read the genre information on p. 138. Point out that students can use Web sites to find information or learn new things. As we read “Learning About Money,” look for interesting facts about money.
Read the rest of the panel on p. 138. Then have students follow the links on this Web site to see what they will find out about saving money.
DURING READING Have students read along with you while tracking the print or do a choral reading of the selection. Stop to discuss that the links on the Web site are similar to a table of contents found in a book.
AFTER READING Have students share their reactions to the selection. Then guide them through the Reading Across Texts and Writing Across Texts activities, prompting if necessary.
  • Which plan do you think Saruni followed?
  • What will you tell him?

AFTER READING Discuss Reading Across Texts. Have students do
Writing Across Texts independently.
Extend Genre Study
RESEARCH Have students research other student-friendly Web sites to find information on saving money. Have them use a Venn diagram to compare and contrast the Web sites.
