DAY 5
Retell Leveled Reader E-Pals
E-PalsModel how to skim the book, retelling as you skim. Then ask students to retell the book page-by-page. Prompt them as needed.
  • Where and when does this story take place?
  • What are the characters in the story like?
2
Reread for Fluency
MODEL Read aloud pp. 4–5 of the Leveled Reader E-Pals, emphasizing appropriate phrasing. Have students notice that using punctuation will help you know where to pause as you read a selection. Then read pp. 8–9 word-by-word without pausing at commas. Have students tell you which model sounded better. Discuss how pausing at commas and reading chunks of words between commas will help them better understand what they have read.
PRACTICE Have students reread passages from E-Pals with a partner or individually.
For optimal fluency, they should reread three or four times. As students read, monitor
fluency and provide corrective feedback. Assess any students you have not yet
checked during this unit.
