TEACH
The vowel sound in the first
syllable of a word can be a clue
as to how the word is divided.
Words with a long vowel sound in
the first syllable should be divided
after the vowel. Words with a short
vowel sound should be divided
after the consonant. Write the
spelling words on the board. Have
students say the words out loud.
Then have them identify whether
the first vowel sound is long or
short, and explain where to divide
the word.
FIND THE PATTERN Ask students to group spelling words by the vowel sound in the first syllable.

WRITE A DESCRIPTIVE PARAGRAPH
Ask students to write a paragraph describing a place or an event. Students should use at least four spelling words. Encourage children
to read their paragraphs aloud to
the class or post them on the
bulletin board.
These common words are
difficult for third-graders to
spell. Alert students to these
frequently misspelled words.

REVIEW SYLLABLE PATTERN V/CV, VC/V
Write the spelling words on the board and divide each one by syllable. Divide some words correctly and some words incorrectly. Have students identify words that are divided incorrectly, and then write the word correctly.
Spelling Strategy
Dividing Words
The sound of the vowel in
the first syllable of a word
shows how the word should
be divided. Encourage
students to sound out words
if they are unsure where they
should be divided.
