STRATEGY CONTEXT CLUES Context clues are the words and sentences around a word whose meaning you don't know. When you come to a word you don't know, look for clues in the context around the word to help you figure out what the unknown word means.

Target Skill SKILL CHARACTER Characters are people or
animals in a story. To learn what a character is like,
look at what he or she says and does.
Target Skill STRATEGY VISUALIZE To understand what
a character is like, you can visualize–make a picture in your mind while you are reading. When you read how a character acts, picture it. When you read what a character says, hear it.
SKILL CHARACTERIZATION Characterization is the way an author describes or portrays a character. You show characterization by reading as if you are the character, feeling and speaking as the character would.
