BEGIN A T-CHART about gardening (Graphic Organizer 25).
Write the title "Gardening" above the chart. Label the left column "Things a Gardener Should Do." Label the right column "Things a Gardener Should NOT Do."
Brainstorm with the class about gardening dos and don'ts. Write their ideas in the
appropriate columns of the chart.
Tell students that, as they read, they should look for details and note new information to add to the chart.
Read each word to students and have them place a check in one of the three
columns: Know (know and can use); Have Seen (have heard or seen the word;
don't know meaning); Don't Know (don't know the word).
Activate Prior Knowledge
Have students share where they may have seen some of these words. Point
out that three of this week's words have a suffix (excitement, gardener, sadness).
Discuss with students how the suffix changes the meaning of the base word.
Suffixes
Check graphic organizers with students at the end of the week and have them
make changes to their ratings.
Use the Multisyllabic Word Routine on p. DI•1 to help students read
multisyllabic words.
