VOCABULARY STRATEGY
Context Clues
Target Skill
UNFAMILIAR WORDS Remind students that they can use context clues to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words. Have students list any unknown words they encountered as they read A Day's Work. They can create a chart showing the unknown word, helpful context clues, and their definition of the word based on its context. Students can confirm word meanings using a dictionary.

BUILD CONCEPT VOCABULARY
Right and Wrong
LOOKING BACK Remind students of the question
of the week: When is a solution the wrong
solution? Discuss how this week's Concept Web
of vocabulary words relates to the theme of right
and wrong. Ask students if they have any words
or categories to add. Discuss whether words
and categories are appropriately related to
the concept.
MOVING FORWARD Preview the title of the
next selection, Prudy's Problem. Ask students
which Concept Web words might apply to the
new selection based on the title alone. Put a
star next to these words on the web.
Display the Concept Web and revisit the
vocabulary words as you read the next
selection to check predictions.

Directions
SET-UP Have students give how-to directions
for writing an e-mail to a friend. Students can
use information from the second selection,
"What Is a Weed?" and a computer to help them
prepare their presentations.
RESEARCH Have students reread "What Is a
Weed?" and practice writing e-mails to review
the steps involved. Suggest that students take
notes and record each step in sequential order.
Students can use note cards to remember the
steps in order.
VISUAL AIDS Consider creating a poster of
the steps involved in writing an e-mail. You may
wish to create a poster that shows the audience
what an e-mail screen looks like. Be sure to
include the Send to, Copy to, and the Subject
line features on the poster.
Delivery Tips
LISTENING
Listen to Directions
Read aloud directions for a simple gardening project while students listen. With partners, students can answer these questions orally or
in writing.
  1. What materials do you need for this project? (Responses will vary.)
  2. How long do you think it would
take for you to complete this project?
    (Responses will vary.)
  3. Retell the directions as well as you
    remember them.
(Students should retell the directions in order as they remember them.)
