Internet Inquiry Activity
EXPLORE MAKING GOOD CHOICES
Use the following 5-day plan to help students conduct this week's Internet inquiry
activity on making good choices. Remind students to follow classroom rules when
using the Internet.
DAY 1
DAY 2
DAY 4
DAY 3
Identify Questions Discuss the topic, making good choices. Brainstorm ideas for specific inquiry questions about making good choices and deciding right from wrong. For example, students might want to find out how to compare options and weigh consequences when making decisions. Have students work individually, in pairs, or in small groups to write an inquiry question they want to answer.
Navigate/Search Explain how to read a Web address and the useful information found in the address. Tell students that the term URL stands for Uniform Resource Locator, an address for documents found on the Web. Knowing how to read a Web address can help students determine if a site will contain relevant information.
Analyze Have students explore and analyze information from the Web sites they identified on Day 2. Tell them to scan and analyze information for credibility, reliability, and usefulness. They can print out and then highlight relevant information.
Synthesize Have students synthesize information from Day 3. Remind them that when they synthesize, they pull together the relevant ideas from different sources to develop answers to their inquiry questions.
Communicate Have students share their inquiry results. They can use a word processing program to create a short article for the school newspaper or class newsletter about making good choices.
DAY 5
RESEARCH/STUDY SKILLS
Procedures and Instructions
TEACH
Invite students to tell about a time when they followed a set of directions to do or make
something. After a few students have shared their stories, guide them to see that
instructions tell what to do in order. Discuss these ideas:
  • Instructions are often numbered to tell the order in which things should be done.
  • It is helpful to read through the entire set of directions before doing anything. This gives the reader an overall idea of the task.
  • Read each individual step and do what it says before going on to the next step.
  • As you follow each step, remember what the overall task is.
  • Carefully study diagrams and illustrations included with the instructions.
Give students a piece of paper. Tell them that they are going to pretend to apply for
a job. Students will follow your instructions to write a few things about themselves.
Read the instructions below.

ASSESS
To assess students' work, have them exchange papers with a partner. Read through
the directions again and have students check the work done. The information for each
number should be complete and in the correct order.
For more practice or to assess students, use Practice Book 3.1, p. 70.
