Centers Survival Kit to organize this week's centers.

Listen to Prudy's Problem and "Meeting the Challenge of Collecting" as you follow or read along in your book. Listen for the main idea and supporting details in each selection.
If there is anything you don't understand, you can listen again to any section.
MATERIALS
Collection of books for
self-selected reading,
reading log
Select a book you have already read. Record the title of the book in your reading log. You may want to read with a partner.
You may choose any of the following:
- Leveled Readers
- ELL Readers
- Stories written by
classmates
- Books from the library
- Prudy's Problem
TEN IMPORTANT SENTENCES Read the Ten Important Sentences for Prudy's Problem. Then locate the sentences in the Student Edition.
BOOK CLUB The theme is the "big idea" of a story. Find a partner who read the same book you did. Discuss the book and figure out what the theme is.

Record the answers to the questions below.
- Explain why you think as you do. Use complete sentences and the underlined words in your answers.

Interview a classmate about his or her collection.
- Ask a classmate to describe his or her collection to you. Take notes.
- Ask questions such as the following: When did you start collecting? Why? How big is your collection? Write the answers.
- Use what you learned to write a report about the collection.
- Illustrate with a picture of the collection.

Create an advertisement for a place in your community.
- Choose a community resource for information such as the local library or a nearby museum.
- List ways the resource can help you.
- Create an advertisement or flier for the resource. Make sure you write about the kinds of information available there.
EARLY FINISHERS Write a short radio ad convincing people to come visit the resource you chose.
MATERIALS
Computer, printer
Write an e-mail about Prudy on the computer and send or print it.
- Use the mouse to click on the e-mail program icon. This opens it.
- Click on "Create Mail" on the toolbar.
- In the "To" box, type the e-mail address of the person who will get the message.
- Type the subject of your message in the subject line.
- Type your message in the message window.
- Click on the "send" icon.
