VOCABULARY STRATEGY
Target Skill
Dictionary
UNFAMILIAR WORDS Remind students that
they can use a dictionary to determine the
meaning of unfamiliar words. Have students
list any unknown words they encountered as
they read Prudy's Problem. They can create a
chart showing the unknown word and its
dictionary definition.

BUILD CONCEPT VOCABULARY
Ideas and Inventions
LOOKING BACK Remind students of the focus question of the week: How can you get ideas to solve a problem? Discuss how this week's Concept Web of vocabulary words relates to the theme of ideas and inventions. Ask students if they have any words or categories to add. Discuss whether words and categories are appropriately related to the concept.
MOVING FORWARD Preview the title of the
next selection, Tops and Bottoms. Ask
students which Concept Web words might
apply to the new selection based on the title
alone. Put a star next to these words on the web.
Display the Concept Web and revisit the vocabulary words as you read the next selection to check predictions.

SPEAKING
Speak with a Purpose
SET-UP Have students work in small groups to solve problems. Groups will identify and solve problems, then present their problem and solutions to the class.
TOPICS Brainstorm a list of problems if
students have trouble identifying one. Possible ideas are: accidentally hitting a ball through a neighbor's window, or receiving more than the correct amount of change at a store check-out.
TEAM PRESENTATION Provide time for groups to rehearse their presentations. Share these group presentation suggestions:
  • Decide what each person will talk about.
  • Offer several possible solutions to the problem.
  • Conclude with the agreed-upon solution.
  • Use note cards only to remind you of key words. Speak without reading the cards.
Listening Tips
LISTENING
Listen to a Broadcast
Have students listen to local radio broadcasts
about a local or national problem. Working in
small groups, students can answer these questions orally or in writing.
  1. What problem is being discussed in this broadcast? (Responses will vary depending on the broadcast.)
  2. Are the broadcasters offering suggestions to help solve the problem? If yes, what are they suggesting? (Responses will vary.)
  3. Can you think of other ways to help with this problem? What would you suggest? (Responses will vary.)
