TEACH
Compound words are formed by
joining two smaller words together.
Write several spelling words on the
board, breaking them into their
smaller parts. Have students put
the words together and say and
spell the new compound word
aloud.
FIND THE PATTERN Guide students to see how each smaller word provides part of the meaning for the compound word. For example, a railroad is a road made of rails. Have students define the meaning of other compound words.
