Select a book you have already read. Record the title of the book in your reading log. You may want to read with a partner.

  • Tops and Bottoms
TEN IMPORTANT SENTENCES Read the Ten Important Sentences for Tops and Bottoms. Then locate the sentences in the Student Edition.
BOOK CLUB Write a two-paragraph book review of the book you just read. Summarize the story. Include the author's purpose and why you liked or disliked the book.

Use the words about gardening to create a word search.
  1. First, use a ruler to draw horizontal (across) and vertical (down) lines on a plain piece of paper.
  2. Print a letter of each gardening word in a box.
  3. Print some words down and some across. Leave lots of empty boxes.
  4. Now, go back and fill in each empty box with a letter. Your word search is complete!
  5. Complete a classmate's word search by circling the "hidden" words.

Describe Chores

Tell someone how to complete your chores.
  1. Recall that Hare did all of Bear's work for him. What if someone else was responsible for your chores?
  2. Write directions for doing your chores around the house. Write them in the order that you would complete them.
EARLY FINISHERS Exchange directions with a partner. Write sentences telling whether you would rather do your chores or your partner's chores.

Compare how Hare and Bear are different when it comes to work.
  1. Draw a T-chart with the left side labeled Hare and the right side Bear.
  2. On each side, describe the character's habits and accomplishments.
EARLY FINISHERS Write two paragraphs, one for Hare and one for Bear. Describe why each accomplished what he did.

Your word processing program can check for errors by proofreading.
  1. Type two or three sentences from the Writing activity.
  2. Use the mouse to click on the Tools icon at the top of the screen.
  3. Click on "Spelling and Grammar."
  4. Spelling and grammar errors, along with extra or missing spaces, will be highlighted and suggested corrections given.
  5. Proofread and print out.
EARLY FINISHERS Click on the Help icon. Then type: "How do I check grammar and spelling?" You will learn other ways to check work.
