ACTIVATE PRIOR KNOWLEDGE
BEGIN A KWL CHART about colonial America.
  • Write "colonial America" on the board. Ask pairs of students to write as many
things as they can about colonial America. Prompt them to think about where the
colonists came from, why they left, where they lived once they arrived, what
resources were available to them, and so on.
  • Draw a KWL chart on the board. Write what students know on the chart. Then
have pairs of students write two to three questions about colonial America. Add
them to the chart. Include a question of your own if necessary.
  • Remind students to look for answers to their questions as they read. Add their
    new information to the chart.

BACKGROUND BUILDING AUDIO This week's audio discusses the lives of
American colonists in the 1600s. After students listen, talk about what they

WORD RATING CHART
Create word rating charts using the categories Know, Have Seen, and Don't Know.
Graphic Organizer 4
Read each word to students and have them place a check in one of the three
columns: Know (know and can use); Have Seen (have heard or seen the word;
don't know meaning); Don't Know (don't know the word).
Activate Prior Knowledge
Have students share where they may have seen some of these words. Point out
that some of this week's words have multiple meanings (spoil, steep, clearing)
and students may learn new definitions for these words.
Multiple-Meaning Words
Check graphic organizers with students at the end of the week and have them
make changes to their ratings.
Use the Multisyllabic Word Routine on p. DI•1 to help students read multisyllabic words.
