Reread for Fluency
MODEL Read aloud pp. 6–7 of the Leveled Reader Antarctica: The Frozen Continent accurately and at an appropriate pace. Have students note how you read each word correctly (self-correct if necessary) and how the speed at which you read helped them follow and understand. Next, read a few sentences very quickly, mispronouncing a word or two. Then read a few sentences very slowly, pausing after each word. Ask which pace sounded best to students. Discuss how reading at an appropriate pace will help students understand and remember what they read.
PRACTICE Have individuals reread passages from Antarctica: The Frozen Continent with a partner or individually. For optimal fluency, they should reread three or four times. As students read, monitor fluency and provide corrective feedback. Students in this group are assessed in Weeks 2 and 4.
