Reread for Fluency
MODEL Read aloud p. 3 of the Leveled
Reader Birds That Can’t Fly! accurately and at
an appropriate pace. Have students note how you
read each word correctly and how the speed at which
you read helped them follow and understand. Point out that it’s often helpful to read nonfiction such as this selection at a slower pace than fiction. Discuss how reading at an appropriate pace will help them understand and remember what they read.
PRACTICE Have individuals reread passages from Birds That Can’t Fly! with a partner or individually. For optimal fluency, students should reread three or four times. As students read, monitor fluency and provide corrective feedback. Students in this group are assessed in Week 3.
