for Fluency
MODEL Read aloud pp. 4–5 of the Leveled Reader Sarah’s Choice with characterization in mind. Have students note how your voice shows emotion and changes when you read lines of dialogue of the various characters. Then read p. 10 with no variation in your voice. Discuss how reading with characterization in mind makes the story more interesting and enjoyable.
PRACTICE Have individuals reread passages from Sarah’s Choice with a partner or individually. For optimal fluency, they should reread three or four times. As students read, monitor fluency and provide corrective feedback. Assess the fluency of students in this group using p. 197a.
