BEFORE READING Using the Picture Walk routine on p. DI•1, guide students through the text focusing on key concepts and vocabulary. Ask questions such as:
p. 4 This picture shows a woman holding a metal detector. What do you think this tool does?
p. 9 What idea does the boy have in this picture? Read pp. 3–4 aloud. Then do a choral reading of pp. 5–8. Have students read and discuss the remainder of the book with a partner. What idea did Joe have? Was it a good idea? Why or why not?

BEFORE READING Review the words on Decodable Reader p. 57. Then have students blend these story words: campgrounds, tremble, farmhouse, spied, mumbled, stumbled, and sunset. Be sure students understand the meanings of words such as campgrounds and tremble.
Use the Picture Walk Routine on p. DI•1 to guide students through the text.
Preteach Phonics
COMPOUND WORDS Write and say the word fireplace. This is a compound word. A compound word is made up of two words put together. Cover the second word and read the first: fire. Cover the first word and read the second: place. Model blending fireplace: fire place, fireplace. Then have students blend the word with you. Each word in a compound word adds to its meaning. Fire is something that is hot and burns. The word place means "a spot, an area." So a fireplace is an area where a fire can burn. Repeat this process with the compound word fingertip. Blend and read the word and have students blend with you. Then ask them to define each word and the compound word.
