for Fluency
MODEL Read aloud pp. 3–4 of the Leveled Reader Metal Detector Detective, using appropriate expression and intonation. Have students note how your voice changes to express boredom, curiosity, and friendliness. Then read pp. 5–6 with no expression or intonation. Ask students which reading sounded better. Discuss how reading with expression and intonation helps make the story more understandable and enjoyable.
PRACTICE Have individuals reread passages from Metal Detector Detective with a partner or individually. For optimal fluency, they should reread three or four times. As students read, monitor fluency and provide corrective feedback. Students in this group are assessed in Weeks 2 and 4.
