Reread for Fluency
MODEL Read aloud pp. 3–5 of the Leveled Reader Growing Vegetables,
emphasizing appropriate phrasing. Have students note how you read words in meaningful groups together. Then read aloud pp. 6–7 word by word, with no phrasing. Have students tell you which model sounded better. Discuss how reading in phrases creates a pleasing rhythm and makes the text easier to understand.
PRACTICE Have students reread passages from Growing Vegetables with a partner or individually. For optimal fluency, they should reread three or four times. As students read, monitor fluency and provide corrective feedback. Assess the fluency of students in this group using p. 249a.
