If…students have difficulty reading story words from the Decodable Reader,
then…reteach them by modeling blending or reading multisyllabic words.
If…partners have difficulty reading the Leveled Reader on their own,
then…have them follow along as they listen to the Online Leveled Reader Audio.

REINFORCE CONCEPTSThis week's concept is housing problems. Deciding how to build a house and what materials to use can be a problem. The best solution depends on where you live. What is the building you live in like? What is it made of?
BEFORE READING Using the Picture Walk routine on p. DI•1, guide students through the text focusing on key concepts and vocabulary. Ask questions such as:
p. 6 This picture shows a cottage like the ones many New England colonists built.
p. 7 This picture shows the inside of the cottage. How many rooms do you see?
Read pp. 3–5 aloud. Then do a choral reading of pp. 6–7. Have students read and discuss the remainder of the book with a partner. Ask: Do you think it would be hard to live in a cottage house in colonial times? Why or why not?

CONSONANT DIGRAPHS Write and say the word ship. What two consonants begin this word? (s and h) These two consonants form a consonant digraph. The consonants in a consonant digraph make just one sound. I read s-h as /sh/. Blend the word ship. Then have students blend it with you. Review the sounds of these consonant digraphs: ch as in chip and as in machine, th as in thin, wh as in when, ph as in elephant, tch as in pitch, and ng as in ring.
